What comes to mind when you hear the word “prophet”? Perhaps you think of Lord of the Rings or some other fantasy story, where some cryptic future crisis is promised that only a coming hero can fix. However, the prophets in the Bible are a bit different than this. More than telling the future, they were primarily concerned with calling Israel to love God and obey His commands. The Bible’s prophets called God’s people to love Him more than anything else and their neighbors as themselves.
Amos, Jonah, Hosea, and Micah were prophets God used to deliver His Word to His people, for His glory and their good. Their messages foretell of the coming of Jesus but they also give us a insight into what a life that honors God looks like now. By studying these books, students will see God’s commitment to justice, His love for the nations, His opposition to idolatry, and the power of His redeeming love.
