First published in 1868, the book is an attempt to analyse and correlate, scientifically, the mythology of the American Indians. The book discusses subjects such as the idea of god, the sacred number, symbols like the bird and the serpent, the myths of water and fire, the myths of creation and the flood, the origin of man, and the soul.
