The Murry editions of the Journal and Scrapbook of Katherine Mansfield are, for scholarship purposes, now obsolete, although my copy of the Journal still has a special place on my bookshelf. Like all Mansfield scholars, I will now be quoting from the Notebooks transcribed and edited by Margaret Scott. (1) There has been some controversy since the publication of the Notebooks, and, even more, since the publication of Margaret Scott's memoir Recollecting Mansfield, surrounding the editing of the Notebooks, and in particular the role of Vincent O'Sullivan in the editing of the Notebooks and the Letters. (2) On the whole, this does little to take away from the authority of the Notebooks as the definitive edition of Mansfield's papers. (3)
