Howard Johnson, a widower, and Honus McDaniels, a bachelor, both live alone in their own respective cabins near a place called Flintlock Mountain. Their daily lives are still filled with awe, as the summer heat rolls into the Pemigewasset. Nearby dwells yet another old man, who seems to be in serious decline.
