Hard Times describes life in an industrial town named Coketown. Through the description of Gradgrind and Bounderby and their fate, the novel condemns the capitalist’s exploitation, criticizes the practical principle of utilitarianism, and chastises the lifestyle of blindly pursuing material interests and the spiritual oppression of inhuman education.
