Epstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a middle-class Jewish household. Epstein's dad worked for New York City's parks. Epstein went to Lafayette High School. He participated in classes at Cooper Union from 1969 to 1971 and later on at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU. Epstein taught calculus and physics at the Dalton School in Manhattan from 1973 to 1975. One of his students was the child of Bear Stearns chairman Alan C. Greenberg.
In 1982, Epstein established his own monetary management company, J. Epstein & Co., handling the possessions of customers with more than a billion dollars in net worth. The organization got Abercrombie & Fitch, and in 1992 transformed a personal school into a huge house that later on ended up being Epstein's in the most affluent part of Manhattan on the Upper East Side. In 1996, Epstein altered the name of his company to The Financial Trust Business and based it on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
