John Francis Campbell (1821 – 1885) was a renowned Scottish author and scholar who specialised in Celtic studies. Campbell gained the world popularity due to his Celtic folklore and Gaelic peoples in particular. Most well-known published works are the bilingual Popular Tales of the West Highlands (4 vols., 1860–62) and The Celtic Dragon Myth, published posthumously in 1911.
“The Girl and the Dead Man” is a Scottish fairy tale collected by John Campbell in Popular Tales of the West Highlands. The storyline focuses on a poor woman's oldest daughter which was seeking for fortune. So mother offered her a whole bannock with her curse or a little one with her blessing. She took the big one, and when she ate and birds begged for some, she refused it. The second girl also set out, and came to the same end. End only one sister left. Will she find out what happened to her relatives?
