This is a comprehensive account of the explorations along the Zambesi (Zambezi) River and up the Shire River to Lake Shirwa (Chilwa) and Lake Nyassa (Malawi). Livingstone describes dangerous encounters with wildlife, slave traders and disease. It was compiled primarily by David Livingstone, with help from his brother, Charles, and others on the expedition. As Livingstone's first book, it was a major success in England and helped to make African exploration in vogue. The book brought Livingstone instant fame as he began to personify the Victorian ideal of an intrepid hero working for Queen, country and Christianity.
