Description

"The Romanists have hitherto defended themselves in such wise that no one has been able to reform them; and this has been the cause of terrible corruption throughout all Christendom."

To the Christian Nobility is one of three major treatises Luther wrote in 1520. This treatise, which has also been called a "cry from the heart of the people" and a "blast on the war trumpet," was the first publication Luther produced after he was convinced that a break with Rome was both inevitable and unavoidable. For this reason, Luther felt it was necessary to write this letter to the nobles of the German state in order to appeal for assistance in the wider work of reforming the Church.
