How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagan examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies of the past as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning with stories of alien abduction, channeling past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms.

This is a must read book, and not just once, read it every few years. It is one of those books that contains so much valuable information that you might overlook some of it the first time you read it. Fortunately, it is a very quick and entertaining read so it is a pleasure to read again.

Everyone in the world should be required to read this. It would make the world a better place as we all embraced a more rational, critical approach to the world instead of letting superstition and nonsensical hocus-pocus muck everything up. Sagan has a wonderful way with words that can make what would be an otherwise dry subject be poetic. Highly recommended!

This would be at the top of my desert island book list. I've read it four times and have bought at least ten copies for friends.

This is a book that every thinking person should read. Sagan is fun to read; he explained sciences better than anyone before or since, in my opinion.
