Description

Military operations and methods are explained in depth by Carl von Clausewitz in this superbly presented edition of On War.
Also known by its German title Vom Kriege, this book is a masterwork of military strategy which walks the reader through elements of tactics, strategy, unit organisation and deployment, battlefield layouts, and much more. Although dating to the 19th century, many of the lessons remain poignant and relevant to this day - theory of conflict, and phenomena such as the 'Fog of War', remain important parts of military theory.
Clausewitz authored this book in the years following his service during the Napoleonic Wars. As a Prussian general with a deep insight into the business of conducting war, Clausewitz was in prime position to share his experiences. In addition he also corresponded with many of the leading military commanders and tacticians; their attitude and ingenuity inspires many of the passages in On War.
This edition of Clausewitz's masterwork is translated to English by Colonel J. J. Graham, who was also a battlefield officer with intimate experience of command. Although stoking controversy between historians since its publication, the observations and knowledge Carl von Clausewitz published within On War were undoubtedly a boon to military tacticians, stategists and enthusiasts.
