A Brief Look Inside:
The Handmaid's Tale is Margaret Atwood's popular 1985 novel. The story follows Offred, a Handmaid living in a dystopian society known as the Republic of Gilead. Gilead has stripped away the rights of women, and Offred is now forced to become pregnant by The Commander to help populate the world that has had declining birth rates. Before the revolution, Offred had an education, a husband, and a daughter of her own, but that world no longer exists.
The Handmaid's Tale was nominated for The Man Booker Prize, The Nebula Award, and The Prometheus Award. It was the recipient of the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987, and the Governor General's Literary Award in 1985.
