I enjoyed reading the first half of this book. Vogel is an engaging writer and she breaks down some pretty complex information and makes it accessible. I like her “do what works for you within these parameters” approach. It’s approachable and non-judgemental. After that part of the book, I felt confident that I could make this plan work for me. Then I read the second half - the part with the food plans and the recipes. I love to cook, but there was only one recipe in the whole book that I found appealing (lamb kabobs). I know she is trying to do a few things with the recipes - make them dairy and grain free, incorporate additional superfoods like collagen and gelatin, include healthier fats like lard - but the end result is so far removed from traditional cooking that it’s not very approachable or appetizing (pork rind pancakes???). I don’t want to feel that in order to be successful on her plan, I have to go online, lay out $$$ for products that I’ve never heard of, and then start cooking these strange new recipes that, even before I make them, I don't think I’ll like. One of the things that bugs me about Keto blogs in general are the crazy recipes - bread made from psyllium powder & eggs? Bread made from ground almonds? Pizza crust made ffrom cheese? You just end up eating obscene amounts of nuts, psyllium powder, and cheese. I was hoping for recipes that would involve simple tweaks to everyday cooking. This isn’t it.
