If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

  • Absolutely love this book!

I absolutely love this book. It hits home if you interact and visualize what you're reading. It will bring so much value to the reader especially the last chapter where it summarizes the 10 lessons of life that Admiral McRaven learned and shares in this book. I've read it twice and it's just an amazing book. You can read it within 2 hours or so. Start each day with a small win and a small accomplishment. Start each day by perfectly making your bed. It will set your day started in a positive note and if you somehow end up having a bad day, you can at least come home to a perfectly and nicely made bed. This book is a must! I encourage everyone to get it.
  • Great wisdom that applies to everyone's life

This small book was full of wisdom. The lessons that the writer shared with us as a navy seal applies to everyone, regardless of what you do. The best wisdom I learned was to NEVER ring the bell. Regardless how tough life may gets, never give up.

The only easy day was yesterday. Isn't that the truth. This was an excellent read and recommend it without reservation.
  • Ringing the bell

I like this book! It's inspiring, and I wouldn't hesitate to pass this along to my kids and grandkids. After reading the book though I wonder about those guys who rang the bell, those who quit. I think most of us mortals would do well to get half way through the rigorous SEAL training. My hat off to those who tried, but failed. I bet you kept trying and found something you were good at, that was fulfilling, and quite possibly inspiring.

What an inspiration. This book clearly shares the personal qualifications that men and women in our armed forces possess and why we as Americans are so fortunate to have these individuals protecting us and our country. Every high school senior and college freshman should have this book as required reading.

When I started reading this book at 645 am, I found myself finishing the read at 758 pm. Me being a Marine Military Brat, these words sound familiar from my father's advice. If anything these ten advices is what I'm going to share with my students whom live in the inner city of Houston, Texas.
  • A good book for those entering the workforce

    By Red2184
Admiral Mcraven book for life is a great read for those of us who are qualified Special Forces, Rangers or Seals. I can relate to his trials in becoming a SEAL which is no minor accomplishment. I just do not think his stories transition well to those entering the work force or looking for guidance for what to do next. Those who aspire to do great things, I believe, are already internally motivated and no amount of cold, phyiscal demand or sand in one’s life will deter them from thir goals. If this books helps one individual learn the importance of never giving up on one’s goals for life, then the Admiral has hit the mark.
