Sir Edmund Gosse was an English critic and literary historian, who translated and introduced the works of continental European writers to English readers.
Published in 1901, “Hypolympia; Or, The Gods in the Island, an Ironic Fantasy” is a play. In accordance with author’s words, this is the iconic fantasy. The scene of this fantasy is an island, hitherto inhabited by Lutherans, in a remote but temperate province of Northern Europe. The persons are the Gods of Ancient Greece. The time is early in the Twentieth Century.
