Description

Sir Edmund Gosse was an English critic and literary historian, who translated and introduced the works of continental European writers to English readers. A prolific man of letters, he wrote literary histories, such as 18th Century Literature and Modern English Literature, as well as biographies of Thomas Gray, John Donne, Ibsen, Raleigh and other eminent people.
Published in 1886, “Raleigh” is a biographical sketch of Raleigh's life. As the author said in preface, it is the first attempt which has been made to portray his personal career disengaged from the general history of his time. A famous history figure, Sir Walter Raleigh was an English soldier, explorer, poet, and courtier who funded three voyages to Roanoke Island and whose ostentatious manner of dress and love for Queen Elizabeth became legendary. The present work is dealt with his remarkable life story.
We are glad to present you the works of the distinguished man of letters, who was named a Companion of the Order of the Bath and was knighted in 1925. Enjoy the reading.
